Naybur (Nippur or Nibu) is the oldest of all Sumerian cities, dating back to 5262 BC. It lies approximately 160 km South East of Baghdad.
Nippur was never a political centre, but it was the special seat of the Sumerian god Enlil, the "Lord Wind," ruler of the cosmos.
The Ziggurat remains to this present day, the site of the Temple of Ekur - a Sumerian term meaning "mountain house". It is the assembly of the gods in the Garden of the gods, parallel in Greek mythology to Mount Olympus and was the most revered and sacred building of ancient Sumer.
